What books would you recommend to someone who’s trying to expand her reading horizons? I mean, the books I’ve read so far are Harry Potter, A Series of Unfortunate Events, other similar children’s books, chick lit, and I’m trying to work my way through The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy (which is already too mature for me, but I’m actually in my late teens.) So what books do you think would suit my taste but be a bit more grown up? Thank you!
Hah, I feel like I get asked this question all the time. And to be honest, it makes me feel a little foolish because I don’t actually read as much as I should or as I would like.
Anyhow, when you asked about something that would suit your taste, I immediately thought of the Hunger Games. I’m not sure if you’ve heard of this trilogy, but it’s written by Suzanne Collins and it’s quite intriguing. The books are pretty short and read easily, I would say they pretty much on par with the reading level of Harry Potter. Um, also I used to ADORE all books written by Margaret Peterson Haddix (especially “Just Ella” and the Shadow Children series) and I feel like you would very much enjoy her literature.
If you’re looking for books that are a little more advanced, I would suggest starting with collections of short stories, they are a good way of easing in and don’t take big time commitments. I read “No One Belongs Here More Than You” by Miranda July recently and it was pretty good, and “The Girls’ Guide to Hunting and Fishing” by Melissa Bank is pretty good also. Um, you might enjoy “What Was Lost” by Catherine O’Flynn as well.
And I think I will stop there, that’s probably enough suggestions for now. I hope that helps!
